Why is our work so important?
This is the only website which publishes all the earliest Saharan paintings and it will be the only source of their knowledge. The old Touareg guides spent most of their nomadic life in the mountains where they knew every painted site. The young guides, however, were already born in the oasis and they only know the main touristic sites. Moreover, several rock art sites have been reported damaged or destroyed. This catalogue, apart from being informative has a fundamental function of recording the World´s cultural heritage which risks to disappear.
Why do we need donations?
This catalogue is completely free of charge and accessible to anyone. It is a work of rock art experts who truly love the Sahara desert and its prehistory. We create this unique database in our free time and with no salary for our work.
As for me (Jitka, head of project), I tried to obtain grants for our project but in the humanities there is too much competition and too little money available. I could have applied for more grants but each application means weeks or even months spent in writing proposals and waiting. I felt that I could not lose more time and I made a life-changing decision: I started this project as my full-time job but with no financial reward. I am a mother of a small child, I live off my savings now but I do what I really love; the Round Head catalogue is an important contribution to humanity and it is a project of my life.
Our catalogue under the name “Roundhead Sahara” is a recognized voluntary organization, registered in Italy with number 90060290500 (codice fiscale).
