The access to the Central Sahara has always been difficult. Contrary to other rock art regions, the Sahara desert is a hostile environment not easily accessible. As a result, only a limited number of sites have normally been shown to travellers during short trips, the majority of rock art sites remaining completely unknown.
The situation even worsened; due to the unstable political situation in Libya and in Niger, many regions have been inaccessible since 2011.
The catalogue, apart from its informative function, will have a fundamental function of recording the World’s cultural heritage which risks to suffer damage or even to disappear.
